Coachella 2012… Almost
If you’re up on America’s best my favorite music festival, then you know about the parade of fake Coachella posters that start appearing several months before the annual event. The phenomenon started by a few industrious graphic hackers is a ritual that newbies and the gullible fall for each year (Come on, is Daft Punk playing this year or what?), and can even cause veterans to sometimes do a double take. But this fake announcement posted on my friend Jason Bentley’s Facebook page is strangely accurate.
UPDATE: Of course, there has to be a Coachella next year. Let’s hope this all gets worked out: Coachella neighbors up in arms.

Dilla: Last Donut of the Night

One of my favorite tracks from Dilla’s instrumental masterpiece Donuts, delivered at almost precisely the time he passed away. So beautiful, haunting and cinematic at once. (source, source)

A few years ago, I used it as the soundtrack for a Coachella inspired slide show of my front row photography. The music seemed to me like a soothing waltz overlaying the chaos of being front of stage.

Coachella 2010 through the lens. A photo gallery of the festival faces set to Miike Snow’s “Silvia.”

I’ve been to every Coachella Music & Arts Festival since 1999 and the best part for me is coming home with photos. Here’s a more complete gallery on Flickr. I love the beautiful faces and smiles of fans so psyched to see their favorite artist or band. And I simply love the scale and grandeur of the desert setting. Enjoy and I’ll see you next year.

Check out the magazine URB produced for Coachella this year.

I (still) love the smell of ink in the morning

Late last night and into the early morning, as I traded REMs for cat naps on a the customer lounge sofa, I found myself suddenly back in my old job. I was on a press check—where the client observes the critical printing stages of a job—just like I used to do for URB years ago. But instead of our now 95% digital URB.COM, we were printing! The inaugural 60-page issue of Camp, a free publication my company produced for the Coachella Music & Arts Festival, lands in hands this weekend.
